Dr. Dale Ironson Psychological Needs In the early 1940s, a humanistic psychologist known as Abraham Maslow developed a model for human motivation. Through this human hierarchy model Maslow demonstrated that humans are motivated by a progression of needs. According to Maslow, people first become motivated by physiological needs. Furthermore, once physiological needs are satisfied they progress to the level of psychological needs, and ultimately they progress to the needs of self- fulfillment. Maslowsââ¬â¢s motivation theory is known as the hierarchy of needs (Huckenbury Huckenbury, 2014). According to Maslow (1943), the hierarchy of needs is divided by five levels of needs. The hierarchy model is depicted in the shape of a pyramid with the larger and lower-levels on the bottom and the need for self-fulfillment at the top. The top level, which is at the peak of the pyramid, is described as the level of achieving ones full potential. Following the top level of self-actualization is the level of esteem. After the level of esteem comes the level of love and elonging. In the level of love and belonging Maslow describes the need of others to fulfill a sense of attachment to a relationship; whether it is friendship, intimate, or family. Subsequently following the level of love and belonging is the level of safety and security. This level describes the need to build financial, personal, health, and safety security. Last, the level of physiological needs ranks to be the lower level of the pyramid. The level of physiological needs is described by Maslow as fulfillment of metabolic requirements for survival. Needs for survivals based on Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchies of needs are; air, food, water, homeostasis, sex, and sleep. All four lower levels of the pyramid are divided as physiological needs and psychological needs. The top level of self-actualization is the level of self-fulfillment (Green, 2000). The concept of Marlowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs is easily understood; however, I do not fully agree with the theory. I agree with the needs described by Maslow such as fulfilling basic physiological needs as well as psychological needs; nonetheless, I do not see a need for it to be broken down in levels. I believe the hierarchy of needs explains motivation as if there is only one ath in life to follow. It demonstrates that first people should fulfill metabolic requirements, to fulfill the need of personal safety, followed by the need of fulfillment of belonging, to the need of acceptance, and finally leading to self-actualization. What if you fulfill the metabolic requirements, possess a sense of belonging, fulfill t he need of self-acceptance; however, you lack the fulfillment of personal security? What happens if one level is met before the other? Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs does not give an explanation describing any type of results if one need is met before the next level in the hierarchy. I believe it is possible to meet one level before the other; therefore, explaining the theory in levels may not be adequate. Perhaps approaching the theory as a balance of all needs of fulfillment would be more adequate than breaking it down in levels. Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy of needs relates to motivation because it explains how humans are growth-oriented. The hierarchy also describes that when one need is fulfilled, the need becomes satisfied; therefore, it will motivate an individual to grow and continue to the next need of fulfillment. Based on Maslowââ¬â¢s hierarchy, I do not find any of the needs to be challenging. I find myself to be a well-rounded person with strong values and morals. I value personal relationships, family, beliefs, opportunities, health, and life in general. My life may not be perfect; however, I am grateful for the positive and negative situations that become present in my life for it is those situations that allow me to grow and become the person who I am today. Modernization of America essays The Transcontinental Railroad was completed in 1869. The telephone was invented in 1876. The first practical system for a radio was developed in 1895. The Wright brothers created a flying machine in 1903. The first gas powered automobile, the assembly line and the refrigerator were produced in the early 20th century. These are all very important steps in laying the foundation for the modernization of America, but I would argue that the first truly modern period in American history would have to be the 1920s. The 1920s brought a capitalistic population who, as a nation, leaned toward isolationism. In two main fields, the 1920s modernized American society to reflect the America of the 21st century more than any era before it. These fields are media and business. Along with a new decade came a new attitude from the media. By 1922 there were 22 magazines in circulation and by the end of the 1920s, 40% of Americans owned a radio. The first tabloid magazine appeared in 1919. The media that we know today spawned from this growth in the 20s. This new type of mass media permitted the spreading of national trends or obsessions, such as flagpole sitting. A 21st century equivalent to this type of rather bizarre behavior of national trends could be the Christmas Tickle me Elmo or Furby craze over the last few years. The national connection that the mass media provided also allowed for fashion to become important and for heroes in the world of sports to emerge. Advertising became a lucrative business and targeted middle class homes. The decade brought a new openness about sex, and the media did not miss the chance to take part in this revolution. This article would further give a review about how the students should be taught in a proper manner. Nowadays the college in which I am studying does not focus on building up the students own views. Instead the teachers focus on the views portrayed by them only. For e.g. the teachers give their view in such a way that the students cannot put in their own thoughts into the subject. This type of educational system is ruining the student's future as in the future these students are not capable to put in their own thoughts if any future situation arises. As described by Paulo Friere the present teaching system does not enlighten the students about their studies. It just describes the teachers own feelings and views. The professors nowadays are not giving in different views on the subjects, instead they are just telling one side of the story. This therefore leads the students to have a particular belief derived from their teacher's views. While the teaching system which should be developed all over should include the overall concepts of teaching, it is the duty of the teachers to give i n both the perspective on a particular topic. They should focus on enlightening the students rather then making the students store the views of the teachers themselves. The teachers are using their designation wrongly and are posing the students a threat. This threat is very dangerous if seen from a student's perspective. The teachers are wrongly using their power to influence the students about one particular topic even if it is wrong or right. This clearly can be seen in a recent incident which happened in the University of Wisconsin when Kevin Barret a professor in the University gave his views on the 9/11 attacks. The views given in by the professors were not proved and rather one sided supported by his own thoughts and perspectives. As the professor had influence on some of the students of the University they took it as reality. This shows that how biased one teacher can be when presenting a topic. The students interviewed during this research clearly showed that their views an d perspectives were similar to that of the teachers. When interviewed they were not fully aware of the facts on one given thought. This shows that the teachers are not providing the students with both the ground facts on one topic, but are rather emphasizing on a one sided story. Thus it is necessary for the teaching system to improve in such a way that it is beneficial for the students. For the teaching system to enhance it is necessary that the teachers provide the students with adequate discussion in the class on a particular topic. Students should be allowed to put in their own personal views when addressing a topic. They should be provided with proper guidance by the teachers so they can pursue a topic.
